These Lumps of Coal are deceiving... they're actually dark chocolate truffles! Easy and fun to make, and a cute edible gift for anyone who's been a bit naughty this year!

Hello friends! Christmas is fast approaching, and I know I'm not the only one struggling to finish up shopping for presents. My oh-so-helpful husband, every time I ask him, tells me that he want "some lumps of coal." Very funny but... well, I decided to make him some just for laughs and share them with you! These Lumps of Coal are actually super simple 3-ingredient chocolate truffles coated in black cocoa powder for a perfectly dark, coal-like finish. They are delicious and so easy to make. Whip these fun truffles up for someone naughty on your list!

What do I need to make these lumps of coal?

I really wasn't kidding when I said you only need three ingredients for these truffles!

    1. Chocolate - you can use whatever kind of chocolate you'd like in here! I used dark chocolate chips, but after having tried the lumps of coal truffles all together, I found that the black cocoa powder is quite smoky and a bit bitter. I would recommend semisweet chocolate for a bit more sweetness to balance the flavors!
    2. Coconut milk - I used full fat coconut milk to bring these truffles together and add extra richness and creaminess. If you drink dairy, heavy cream will work great in here! Another non-dairy substitute that should work well is "extra creamy" oat milk or even soy milk.
    3. Black cocoa powder - this is the most important part! While I have bought dark cocoa powder in stores before, I really wanted something pitch black and bought it on Amazon. It really is as dark as you'd expect! The flavor is a bit stronger than regular cocoa and it is a little more smokey and bitter. Be sure to shake all the excess off so your flavors are better balanced.

How do I make these truffles?

    1. First, heat up your coconut milk and chocolate together over medium-low until the chocolate melts and everything is smooth and creamy.
    2. Transfer your melted chocolate to a shallow plate, and refrigerate until mostly solid.
    3. Use a small scoop or spoon to make your truffles. Roll them between your hands to shape them.
    4. Finally, gently roll your truffles into the black cocoa to transform them into lumps of coal. Be sure to shake off any excess cocoa!
    5. I recommend enjoying your truffles at room temperature for the best flavor and texture 🙂

I hope you guys will give these "lumps of coal" a try! They are so simple to make, delicious, and a fun and festive treat! Make these with kiddos {if you're brave enough to risk the mess} or just make them as a funny edible gift for someone who's been a bit naughty this year. 🙂 Happy treat making!

    Ingredients

    • 10 oz bag about 2 cups dark or semisweet chocolate chips
    • 1 cup full fat coconut milk
    • ¼ cup black cocoa powder for coating

    Instructions

    • In a medium nonstick pot, combine the chocolate chips and coconut milk over medium low heat. Heat mixture, stirring occasionally, until chocolate is smooth and melted.
    • Remove pan from heat, and transfer chocolate mixture to a shallow bowl. Place in refrigerator and chill until solid (about 2 hours).
    • When the chocolate has solidified, use a small scoop or spoon to carve out walnut-sized portions. Roll gently between your hands to shape the "lumps of coal."
    • Place the black cocoa powder in a small bowl, and gently roll the truffle around to coat it. Shake off any excess cocoa.
    • Place your finished truffles on a plate or a sheet lined with wax paper. Store truffles in the refrigerator. I recommend enjoying them at room temperature for the best flavor!
